Ankle Arthroscopy

Ankle arthroscopy is a procedure in which the surgeon uses a camera (arthroscope) to examine the ankle joint and sometimes treat the problems related to the joint. It is a minimally invasive procedure via a small incision. Thus, it involves less pain and fast recovery.

Problems such as ankle pain, stiffness not being diagnosed with other diagnostic methods.
Instability and impingement - diagnosis and treatment.
Removing pieces of bones, cartilage or scar tissues.
Torn ligaments repair like ATFL repair.
Osteochondritis dissecans of the talus and its associated cartilage repair procedure.
Total synovectomy in gross synovitis cases like rheumatoid arthritis.

For this procedure, a general or regional anaesthesia is used. After that 2 small incisions are made on the ankle joint. From one incision, an arthroscope is inserted into the joint to view the joint thoroughly via a video camera on a big screen. Then from other 1 or 2 incisions instruments are inserted into the joint to hold the structures or perform the surgery if required. At the end, the incisions are closed with stitches, and then dressing is done.

  • Small Cuts

  • Minimal chances of infection

Precautions To Be Taken Post-Surgery

  • Avoid weight bearing on the ankle joint for a few days.
  • May require limb elevation and ice application.
